The Summer Solstice 2014...and so it begins.

Before I start with my weekly banter about surfing and life here on the New England shoreline, I want to thank all of you who reached out to me with your most sincere condolences about the recent loss of my nephew. If you missed last week's blog, just go on to the archives page and click on last Sunday's date.

This is me holding Michael during the Christmas of 1983 at my late parent's home. The road ahead will certainly be difficult for my sister and my family, but like I said, "The bright shining light of love is stronger than the darkness that came and swallowed up this
young man and his incredible talent."

This is Michael at GUNSTOCK in 2004.

I left his logo and portfolio link up in the right hand column. You can scroll down and click on his graphic "Mikey Cheese" to see his incredible reel . It's worth the click.

Better times. Mike Colby. Max, Jesse, and Ralph.

OK so here we are. Another summer. I know that summer is the dreaded season for most of you hardcore surfers. And with good reason. I'd list them here but you already know. The Summer doldrums are real if you're a REAL surfer. God I remember them all very well when I was a full on hardcore wanting to do NOTHING but surf all day surfer, watching the days of complete flatness.

And then when those rare days of waves came, we have to deal with the swimmers, lifeguards, and no surfing zones.

Watching good waves where you can't surf is frustrating at best.

Last Saturday I was standing with two friends at the wall. It was overcast and cold. There was a light rain falling off and on. The surf was chest high and really fun looking. There was not a single tourist or swimmer on the beach in either direction when I heard the first one of the season. The whistle. The lifeguard at 10th Street was blowing her whistle so loud trying to corral the 100 or so surfers into a surf area.

I couldn't help myself so I walked over and asked, "Why would you make all the surfers who were spread out along this entire 2.5 mile stretch of cement, sit on each other and surf in an area that was 100 yards wide?" She said it was her first day on the job and she was only doing what she was told. I get that.

But isn't there a time for simple discretion? I mean the whole reason why there is a surf zone on the hot and sunny days is basically for safety reasons. You don't want surfboards and swimmers in the same area. I understand that.

But by making all the surfers converge on a half dozen peaks, she was essentially creating more havoc and danger for the surfers. Her first day on the job could of resulted in a some poor surfer getting a fin in the head or worse. And Miss Lifeguard would have to not only make a dangerous rescue, but she would now be forced to administer first aid. On her first day. Good grief!

None of it made sense. But rather than argue, I walked away.

I have seen and heard it all before. Year after year. Summer after summer. This is our nightmare. Our Endless Summer is really our Endless Bummer. But alas my dear friends. It all ends on Labor day. So be patient my little surfing grasshoppers. Your time will come again. Besides, there's always the occasional hurricane.

Can't surf here. These swimmers might get hurt. Get on it before 10:00AM or after 5:30PM. Otherwise become a guppy in the fishbowl that is the surf zone. Ugh.

Speaking of Endless Summer's...this summer is the 50th anniversary of the Endless Summer. If you're as old as I am you would remember this movie as the ONLY surf movie worth watching for years on end. I think I saw this movie in 1966. It was at the North Shore mall in Peabody, MA and my dad took us to see it. I remember leaving that theater on cloud 9.

It was such a life changing event for me.

And I know that every surfer who saw that movie in the first year or two after it cam out felt the same. We all wanted to go out and find our own "Perfect wave". I'm happy to say, that I did go out and find that wave and live that dream. Just five years later. We found our own Cape St. Francis....though our discovery was a tad colder.

Any ways this summer and more specifically, on July 19th the ENDLESS SUMMER 50th tour is coming to Cinnamon Rainbows and The Music Hall in Portsmouth for a showing.

This will be a great night for ALL surfers. Mark it on your calendars--July 19th, 2014 at 7:30PM. The 50th anniversary
of the FIRST AND ONLY REAL Surf Movie: The ENDLESS
SUMMER is coming to New Hampshire. Don't miss it.

My latest movie is due for a early July showing. And I think I'll end
up showing it at the Legion (next to Flatbread) for an old school premiere. Or we might try and show it outside. That would be the ultimate in OLD SCHOOL Surf Moviedom. Portions of the proceeds will go to the WOUNDED WARRIORS PROJECT.
So Stay tuned for the premiere showing of THE COLD COAST.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

ISIS The Islamic State of Iraq and Al Sham is short for Al Qeada
of Iraq. These barbaric thugs are some of the most vile human beings on the planet. If you have seen any of the horrific video clips of the senseless executions these devils are doing you
would be outraged. Just some of the most disgusting things I
have ever seen in my life.

And Obama sending in 300 US Advisors is a freaking JOKE! Let me say this once and for all. This current administration is BY FAR the worst ever in our nation's history. Hands down the worst. They are truly the GANG That Couldn't Shoot Straight. Just a total waste of 8 years. If you voted for him this is on you. You reap what you sow. At this point, I think the better call is to launch some DRONES to quell their progress. Otherwise what are we doing? Not to mention that NOW we are actually forced to support the SHIITES (can you say IRAN?) over the Sunnis. Regardless, these demonic murderous Radical Islamic fuck wads are THE ENEMY.

Remember September 11th, 2001? HELLO? We are at war with radical Islamic terrorists. ISIS is OUR enemy.

Here's a little history lesson for the White House Gang. We have TROOPS in Germany, Japan, and Korea. Why? Because after WWII and the Korean war, we NEEDED to keep a presence there. IF WE WERE NOT THERE? Things would be way worse than they are now. I am all for pulling the combat troops out of IRAQ like Bush had wanted. But the PLAN was ALWAYS to leave enough of a US MILITARY presence behind to keep the radical groups like these freaking idiots in place! But NO ONE in that White House has ever worn a uniform. Yet you are all in charge of the men and women who do, and you HAVE NO CLUE as to how to run that ship. Zero. Nada. It's really frightening to think about.

John McCain why did you pick Sarah Palin as a running mate?

IN OTHER NEWS

Wishing the USA Soccer team the best of luck today as they battle Portugal. Not really much of a soccer fan so I don't know who's who out there. However, I am a fan of the USA teams.

Go USA And may the announcer yell GOAL many times today!!!!

More fun this week with KSM and my weekly humiliation of Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM), the mastermind behind 9-11. Here we see KSM as a Soccer player for the much defeated Al Qeada Soccer Team....

So once again, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly
humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001.

* Note to self: Must pick up a case of soccer balls at Home
Depot this week.

(Below) This photo could have been taken in 1964. Or 1974. Or 1984, 1994... you get where I'm going. The empty wave is a timeless photo. Where surfers and the boards we ride, change over the years, the waves we ride do not. They are the one constant element to this thing of ours. How many empty waves have you seen in your lifetime?

Today- WHO DA GUY? Photo by Jeff Winterton

(Above) I
have looked at this photo for years and have not been able to determine who it is. Some say Kevin Grondin while I think it's Stevie Dillon. The guy who took the photo was around for about two years and then vanished. The shot was taken at the Wall and I believe it was sometime
around 1998 and 2000. If ANYONE knows who this is, please let me know.
